Jon Zmikly May 01

Now that May has arrived, it’s safe to say spring is in full effect. And along with the warmer temperatures, yard sales and severe allergies, you may be giving your home or office a well needed spring cleaning.

You may not think about this, but your website gets cluttered, too. With the daily wear and tear of uploading images, creating posts, and multiple user accounts, not to mention the high holiday traffic season well behind us, there’s a good chance your site needs a little care and sprucing up. From cleaning up messy code to fixing slow speeds, check out these 5 tips to get your site in tip-top shape for some of the busiest months of the year for web traffic.

1. Review Your UX

A user’s experience (UX) with your website, app or tactile product will always determine its success. If colors clash, buttons are in the wrong place or images are warped, a user may become frustrated and move on to another site. UX is defined as “the overall experience of a person using a product such as a website or computer application, especially in terms of how easy or pleasing it is to use.” So, with any website, app or design, you must start thinking about your user first.

Start by asking close friends or family to give their honest opinions. Though they may not be designers or professionals, neither are most of your visitors. You need a fresh set of eyes and real answers. Even with basic feedback like, “The font is too small,” or “the alignment seems off”, you can quickly make small tweaks to the site. Of course, finding a focus group of strangers can help as well, as they will most likely be more honest with their answers.

Quick Fixes:

  • If you don’t have a “sticky header”, add a footer menu to your site. That way, instead of the user having to scroll back to the top to access the navigation, it’s already available at the bottom.
  • Be sure your logo links to your home page.
  • If you’re a local business, provide contact information somewhere in the header of the site.
  • Make your site mobile friendly. Immediately.
