Content Kings: Our Staff’s Favorite Stories From Around the Web This Week

George Kiel Nov 12

As an ode to the awesome content creators of the world, every Saturday will see each of our staff members choosing a favorite content piece – from the week – that you can read/watch during you spare time on the weekends.

Although Election Day and its results dominated news this week, there were tons of other great content pieces that could’ve came across this week if you effectively scoured the ‘Net. Without further ado, here are our staff’s favorite stories from around the web this week.

Iguana vs. Snakes – Planet Earth II

I had my favorite content piece of the week selected by the middle of the day on Monday. Those who know me best know that I’d rather watch an animal documentary – something on Animal Planet or Discovery Channel – more than anything else, including basketball. This was by far the most compelling two minutes I’ve seen from any animal doc. I think I watched it five times.

Why Is It So Difficult for Video Game Movies to Succeed? – HYPEBEAST

why-is-it-so-difficult-for-video-game-movies-to-succeed

As someone who’s been a movie buff and avid gamer for as long as I can remember, I always wondered why most popular gaming franchises failed to make the transition to the big screen. This National Geographic story by Jon Bowen was both unique and inspiring. Not only does his illustrative and descriptive prose drop me right into his wild ride, but his multilayered “story behind the story” was particularly impactful. With images, illustrations and links for context, Bowen’s experience cycling through the deserts of Africa “on a mission to embrace conservation and support local communities” is definitely worth a read.

#WannaSprite – Sprite

It’s a little old but still great content. Sprite hits online viewers with mega-superstar LeBron James using quite a bit of reverse psychology to get viewers to #WannaSprite. Sprite takes a different approach with this advertisement, poking fun at typical commercials, which any viewer would enjoy. However, I think that Sprite putting this commercial online, their use of humor, and including emerging rapper Lil’ Yachty, is what makes this content so great. Sprite understands their audience, and they made an advertisement specifically to hit their millennial audience that sits on Youtube all day, enjoys humor, and presumably knows who Lil’ Yachty is. Good luck getting ‘Cold like a Sprite Soda’ out of your head.

With More NBA Success, Bismack Biyombo’s Biggest Win is Changing More Lives in the Congo – NBPA

Staff Stories

I love when stories go beyond the field of play. In this touching first person account, Orlando Magic Center Bismack Biyombo discusses his journey to a big contract, and more importantly, his impact on his native Congo. Sometimes, we lose sight of how much sports stars from other countries mean to their homeland, but this story reminds of that it is usually more than just a game.
