Snapchat Stories Can Now Be Shared Outside of the App

It’s no secret Snapchat hasn’t been doing so well these days. Amidst a user growth problem and copycat apps like Instagram Stories, the self proclaimed camera company is struggling to find ways to forge ahead. But for those who do enjoy the social media platform, the company is now making it easier to share Snaps beyond the app itself.

Last week, Snapchat launched the ability to share Stories more publicly via links. The links will then take you to the Story on Snapchat.com where anyone can view them. Similar to a YouTube video on Facebook, the link will provide a preview to the Snap, and users will be able to see the content there when shared.

As of right now, the only openly public Stories are those found on the Discover tab, such as Official Stories and Our Stories. This is just a start, but Snapchat says this is just what was included “at launch,” an indication of possibly sharing more kinds of stories over time.

The feature went live to those who were already running a redesigned version of the app including “test markets” in Canada and Australia. The iOS and Android update will become available to users from around the world over the next couple of weeks.

The link is simple to use and could eventually become more “embed-friendly,” like other social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

In addition to these new features, the web versions of the shared stories will not have Snap Ads. This won’t last forever, as the social media platform isn’t completely ruling out monetization.

Even though Snapchat wasn’t made to be a completely public app and sharing Stories on other social media sites may be counterintuitive, there is a catch. Shared Snap stories, including Our Stories and Search Stories, will only last 30 days outside of the app, even if you have a link. Any Official Story will only be live for 24 hours.

Will this new update be beneficial for you, Snapchat content creators? Or will the sharing limit create a challenge? Let us know your thoughts!
