Snapchat Stock Drops After Rihanna Called It Out for A Domestic Violence Ad

Rikki Yanez Mar 16

Rihanna is refusing to accept Snapchat’s apology after recent ad ran on its platform asking users if they would rather ‘slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown’. Referencing the 2009 incident where Chris Brown physically his then-girlfriend Rihanna, the ad that appeared on Snapchat was for the smartphone game Would You Rather.

Rihanna posted her disgust Thursday to her Instagram Story, and fans have shared her sentiments on Twitter and other social networks. Even Chelsea Clinton condemned the ad.

Åccording to Time, Snapchat released an apology stating, “The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry this happened.”

After the apology was made Rihanna responded to Snapchat by posting on Instagram: “I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb!” The singer went on to state this matter isn’t about how she feels, but how Snapchat shouldn’t condone ads that bring shame to the victims of (or dealing with) domestic violence. She finished her statement by saying to “throw the whole app-oligy away.” Her response has caused many users on Twitter follow along, too.

In February, Snapchat launched a new update which angered millions and even caused reality star Kylie Jenner to  declare the app ‘dead’, caused a 7% drop in Snap Inc. stock. SinceRihanna’s public announcement to ditch the app, shares have gone down by nearly 5% after.

Now that people are reverting to Instagram Stories, who knows if there will still be a future with Snapchat.
