Denzel Washington Challenges the Integrity of Content Creators Everywhere

George Kiel Dec 13

Director and star Denzel Washington recently attended a screening of his upcoming, highly-anticipated movie Fences at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C., but the topic of discussion following the event was not the movie but more so his criticism of the content creators and journalists of mainstream media.

“If you don’t read the newspaper, you’re uninformed. If you do read it, you’re misinformed,” he said to The Hill. “In our society, now it’s just first — who cares, get it out there. We don’t care who it hurts. We don’t care who we destroy. We don’t care if it’s true. Just say it, sell it. Anything you practice you’ll get good at — including BS.”

Washington’s remarks, which were made on the red carpet at the aforementioned event, were in response to a question from a reporter on hand who asked him about the “fake news” story that falsely claimed Denzel dropping his support of Hillary Clinton to endorse Donald Trump midway through election season. The story was shared on multiple platforms thousands of times before being removed and debunked.

“We live in an era of too much information,” Denzel said, also mentioning that being first to the web with news is one of the great pressures on the media today. “So what’s the real responsibility you all have? To tell the truth.”

Denzel is a 100% correct with this stance, as a ton of media outlets rather be first than correct these days. Website clicks equal money, so the juiciest stories and headlines are manufactured. And therein lies the BS.
